MDF vs particle board: what changes in practice?
Both are engineered furniture boards, but their core structure and working behaviour differ.
Core structure
MDF is made from finer wood fibres and normally has a more uniform edge. Particle board contains visibly larger wood particles.
Surface and routing
MDF's uniform structure is generally more suitable for routed profiles and paint-ready work. Pre-laminated particle board is often chosen when a ready factory surface is the priority.
Weight and handling
Density varies by product and thickness. Ask for the manufacturer's data when weight materially affects the installation.
Fasteners and edges
Hardware selection, pilot holes, edge distance and repeated assembly matter. Do not assume that the same screw practice suits every substrate.
The buying question
Choose by application, finish, moisture exposure, hardware system, machining process and budget—not by a blanket claim that one board is always superior.
